Who is a mountain leader?

A Mountain Leader (AMM) is a professional figure recognized by Law 6/1989, and updated by Law No. 182 of December 2, 2025, which regulates mountain-related professions. They are an expert in hiking who, after obtaining technical qualification through a course and an exam, is registered in a special list managed by the Regional or Provincial College of Alpine Guides, under the supervision of local authorities.

What are their skills and responsibilities?

A Mountain Leader is authorized to accompany people on hikes along mountain trails, including those classified as EE (Expert Hikers), excluding glaciers and itineraries requiring mountaineering techniques, and with the authority to lead on snowy terrain using snowshoes. A Mountain Leader does not just guide: their role is to ensure the safety and well-being of participants, while also enriching the experience with explanations about the natural environment, culture, and traditions of the area.

As an environmental interpreter, the Mountain Leader promotes a deep understanding of the landscape, illustrating naturalistic, historical, and anthropic aspects. Furthermore, they collaborate with schools and institutions on environmental education projects, contributing to the development of ecological awareness.

How do you become a Mountain Leader?

To practice the profession, it is necessary to:

  • Attend a training course organized by the regional or provincial Colleges
  • Pass a qualifying exam that verifies technical and cultural skills
  • Register in the special regional/provincial list, an essential requirement to operate legally.

This figure is, along with the Alpine Guide, the only one in Italy authorized to lead hikes on challenging routes, ensuring safety and quality of experience.
