Descent along the Austro-Hungarian Trail

Mezzolago – Cima Oro via Val Dromaé

Descent along the Austro-Hungarian Trail

There are mountains that tell stories, and others that guard them in silence. Cima Oro belongs to both: a place where authentic nature meets the deep traces of memory.

The itinerary starts from Mezzolago, heading up the shady Val Dromaé, a cool and silent valley that gradually opens up as you climb toward the pass of the same name. From here, your gaze rests on Cima Oro, so named for the golden reflections that illuminate it in the early morning hours, when the sun lights up the rocks with a warm, precious glow.

Once at the summit, the panorama opens into a full embrace of the Val di Ledro and its lake, suspended between woods and mountains. But it’s the descent that offers the most intense emotion: the Austro-Hungarian trail runs along a ridge dotted with trenches, tunnels, and Great War outposts. These military works of the Austro-Hungarian army, now restored and made safe, allow you to literally walk through history, amidst panoramic views and evidence of a past that is still palpable.

At the end of the hike, the day can continue with a visit to the Lake Ledro Pile Dwelling Museum, where the remains of the ancient prehistoric village discovered in 1929 are preserved: a journey even further back in time, perfect to complete the experience.

La guida

Roberto Boniotti

My name is Roberto Boniotti and the mountains are my life. For over 40 years, I have been exploring peaks, valleys, and trails, turning my passion into a profession that combines technical expertise, safety, and respect for nature.

My parents passed on their passion for the mountains to me from a very young age. From my first walks in the woods with my parents, I gradually began to explore the areas I encountered and to look up at the sky, toward those mountains that seemed unreachable. And with each new summit reached, new horizons and mountains to discover and explore gradually opened up.

With friends, I started attending Italian Alpine Club courses in mountaineering, ski mountaineering, and rock climbing, and eventually, the mountains became my world—discovered and yet to be discovered in all their aspects.

After many years of life experience in the mountains and having led students through the Alps as a mountaineering and ski mountaineering instructor—training them from a technical, cultural, and human perspective—I earned my Mountain Leader certification in 2021 to turn my passion into a job and share my experiences with those who want to enjoy the pleasure of the mountains with me.

Points of interest

  • Lake Ledro (view from Mezzolago) You start from the small village of Mezzolago, overlooking Lake Ledro. Right from the first stretches of the climb, you can turn around and catch that incredible view of the turquoise water nestled between the mountains. It's a great spot for a photo before entering the woods.

  • Val Dromaé The valley is wild and off the beaten path, with long stretches through the woods and panoramic glimpses as you climb. It's a very peaceful, almost suspended environment, perfect if you're looking for authentic nature and silence.

  • Cima Oro (1,802 m) The summit is the highlight: a wide-open panorama over Lake Ledro, Lake Garda, and the surrounding mountains. On clear days, the view is truly vast and rewarding. A sandwich break here is practically mandatory.

  • Trenches and WWI remains Along the route, and especially near the summit, you'll come across remains of Austro-Hungarian military positions: trenches carved into the rock and walkways. A historical touch that makes the hike even more interesting.
